Thermal Envelope Assessment

Assessing the thermal envelope of healthcare facilities in Ukraine is essential for protecting patients, staff, and medical services, especially during cold winters and periods of energy instability. The thermal envelope is the part of the building that separates indoor spaces from the outdoor environment. It includes walls, windows, doors, ceilings, and floors.

When this envelope is weak or damaged, buildings lose heat quickly, indoor temperatures drop, and heating systems are forced to work harder. In healthcare settings, this can impact patients’ recovery, may delay the discharge from the hospital, or increase the risk of some nosocomial infections, particularly for vulnerable patients staying in the intensive care units, operating theaters, or maternity hospitals.
