Ukraine’s Ministry of Health has held working-level talks with representatives of the Gustave Roussy Institute (Paris) — Europe’s leading comprehensive cancer centre — to advance a long-term oncology partnership.
Deputy Minister of Health and Chief State Sanitary Doctor Ihor Kuzin met with Rémi Tiolé, International Adviser and Head of International Relations at Gustave Roussy, to discuss the development of oncology care and the progressive alignment of Ukraine’s cancer services with European standards.
This engagement forms part of the broader Ukraine–France health cooperation framework, supported by instruments including the Fonds Ukraine and the intergovernmental grant agreement between the two governments. CDC-S is among the donors contributing to health system strengthening in Ukraine within this international cooperation architecture.
Strategic areas discussed during the meeting included:
- Early cancer detection — expanding screening capacity and improving early-stage diagnosis across Ukrainian health facilities. Special attention to the early detection of the breast cancer.
- Deployment of mobile medical teams in conflict-affected areas.
- Digitalisation of Ukrainian healthcare and telemedicine.
- Expanded patient access to modern treatment — reducing geographic and systemic barriers to advanced oncology care
- Personalised medicine — introducing individualised diagnostic and therapeutic approaches aligned with current European practice
- Workforce development — preparing clinical teams for the adoption of new technologies and treatment protocols
- Integration of Ukraine’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) into the Gustave Roussy network — a flagship initiative to embed NCI within the institutional network of Europe’s top-ranked oncology centre
- NCI infrastructure development — establishment of a training centre, an operating theatre with remote expert support, and a pathomorphology laboratory
- NCI as a regional oncology hub — strengthening the institute’s role as a centre of excellence for high-specialised care, clinical innovation, and the dissemination of modern oncology standards across Ukrainian regions
Deputy Minister Kuzin underscored the strategic importance of equitable access to oncology care across Ukrainian regions, and the need for sustained investment in professional training and diagnostic capacity. The meeting built on a memorandum of cooperation previously signed between Gustave Roussy and Ukraine’s National Cancer Institute.
