mercenary

An individual who participates in armed conflict primarily for financial gain, recruited specifically to fight and directly engage in hostilities. Under international humanitarian law, a mercenary is not a national of any party to the conflict, does not reside in territory controlled by a party, is not a member of the armed forces of any party, and has not been sent on official duty as a member of another state’s armed forces.
