Truth and Reconciliation Commission
A truth and reconciliation commission is an officially authorized temporary body that investigates and reports on systematic human rights violations tied to a specific conflict or period in a country’s history. Its goals include providing a comprehensive account of past atrocities, officially recognizing victims’ suffering, fostering national healing, supporting new political orders, and recommending measures to prevent future abuses. While it amplifies victims’ voices and contributes to inclusive national memory, it lacks prosecutorial power and cannot enforce its recommendations, which rely on political will for implementation.
