De lege lata is a Latin phrase meaning ‘according to the law as it exists,’ referring to the current state of legal rules and principles in force at a given time. It is used to distinguish between the law as it is actually applied and interpreted by courts and authorities, as opposed to proposals for what the law should be in the future (de lege ferenda).
