Annexation

The forcible acquisition and assertion of sovereignty over another state’s territory, typically through military conquest or unilateral declaration, as opposed to voluntary transfer via treaty. While initially illegal under international law, annexation may gain de facto legitimacy through widespread recognition by international bodies or other states.
