Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)

A doctrine in which the threat of total nuclear annihilation prevents either side from initiating a conflict, as any first strike would be met with a devastating retaliatory attack, ensuring mutual destruction and thus maintaining strategic stability between nuclear-armed states.
