common Article 3

Common Article 3 refers to a provision found in all four Geneva Conventions that establishes minimum standards of humane treatment for individuals not taking part in hostilities during non-international armed conflicts. It prohibits violence, murder, torture, hostage-taking, and degrading treatment, and requires care for the wounded and sick.
