WFP

Organization: World Food Programme

About

WFP was founded in 1961 as a UN agency and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020. It operates across emergency food response, nutrition, school feeding, livelihood support, and supply chain logistics, including acting as the lead agency for the UN Logistics Cluster. WFP is one of the largest single users of cash and voucher assistance (CVA) in the humanitarian system.

WFP Ukraine has been among the agency’s most operationally complex responses since 2022. WFP provides food vouchers redeemable at retail and pharmacy networks for eligible households, direct in-kind food assistance to areas with limited market access, and common logistics services (warehousing, transport coordination) that benefit the broader humanitarian community. WFP’s CVA experience and retail network in Ukraine are relevant references for organizations — including CARE — designing pharmaceutical and commodity voucher programmes within the humanitarian architecture.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization focused on food security and nutrition, reaching over 150 million people in approximately 120 countries. It provides emergency food assistance, cash and voucher assistance (CVA), school feeding, nutrition programmes, and logistics support as the UN’s lead logistics cluster.

Ukraine Commitment

WFP Ukraine operates one of the agency’s largest CVA programmes globally, providing food vouchers and cash to internally displaced and conflict-affected households; WFP also manages common logistics services and supports the Ukrainian government’s social protection system.
