UN Women

Organization: United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women

About

UN Women was established in 2010 through the merger of four previously separate UN bodies (INSTRAW, OSAGI, DAW, UNIFEM) to create a unified agency for gender equality. It works at the intergovernmental level (supporting UN member state commitments to gender equality) and at country level (implementing programmes on ending GBV, women\’s leadership, economic empowerment, and peace and security). UN Women co-leads the GBV Area of Responsibility globally.

UN Women Ukraine has been a central coordination actor since 2022, co-leading the GBV sub-cluster and producing gender-responsive analysis of Ukraine\’s humanitarian needs. Key programmes include funding GBV prevention and response services through NGO partners, supporting women-led and women\’s rights organizations, advocating for gender-transformative approaches in recovery planning, and monitoring the gendered impacts of the conflict. For CARE — whose programmes explicitly target women and girls through SRH and GBV services — UN Women Ukraine is both a coordination partner and a potential co-funder for gender-focused programming.

UN Women is the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women, working globally to eliminate discrimination, shape humanitarian and development policies, and deliver programmes for women\’s rights, GBV prevention, women\’s economic empowerment, and women\’s participation in peace processes.
