MFAT
Organization: New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
About
MFAT was established in 1943 and manages New Zealand’s external relations, trade agreements, and development cooperation. New Zealand’s ODA focuses primarily on the Pacific region but includes a global humanitarian response programme. MFAT channels humanitarian funding through multilateral organizations and New Zealand NGO partners in response to major crises.
New Zealand responded to the Ukraine crisis with a dedicated assistance package announced in 2022, comprising contributions to UNHCR, ICRC, and bilateral NGO funding for emergency health, shelter, and protection programming. While New Zealand’s total Ukraine ODA is modest in absolute terms relative to larger G7 donors, it demonstrates a principled commitment to the international humanitarian response. MFAT’s Ukraine funding is most accessible through its multilateral channel contributions rather than direct bilateral NGO grants for non-New Zealand organizations.
The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) manages New Zealand’s foreign policy, trade, and international development cooperation, including ODA delivery through bilateral programmes, multilateral contributions, and emergency humanitarian response.
Ukraine Commitment
New Zealand has provided humanitarian assistance to Ukraine since 2022, primarily through contributions to UNHCR, ICRC, and UN agencies, alongside a bilateral response package channelled through MFAT and New Zealand NGO partners.
