Diakonie

Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe was established in 1954 and is based in Berlin. It is a member of ACT Alliance, the global network of Protestant and Orthodox church-related humanitarian and development organizations, and cooperates with Bread for the World on development programming. Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe provides emergency relief through local partner organizations, emphasizing localization, accountability, and principled humanitarian action.

Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe has been engaged in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, channelling funding through Ukrainian civil society and faith-based partners for emergency food, shelter, NFI, MHPSS, and health-related assistance. Its localization approach — working through Ukrainian organizations rather than directly implementing — positions it as a relevant funder for national NGOs and church-based social service organizations in Ukraine. For international NGOs such as CARE, Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe’s funding is most accessible via ACT Alliance joint appeals and partnership frameworks.

Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe is the emergency relief department of the German Protestant Church (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland), providing humanitarian assistance in acute crises worldwide through a partnership model with local faith-based and civil society organizations. Diakonie Deutschland is the broader diaconal welfare organization of the German Protestant Church.

Ukraine Commitment

Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe has been active in Ukraine since 2022, funding local partners for emergency health, food, shelter, and MHPSS support; it operates through a localization model, channelling funds through Ukrainian faith-based and civil society organizations.
