LWB
Organization: Libraries Without Borders
About
Libraries Without Borders (LWB) is an international non-profit organization that believes in the power of knowledge to transform lives. Founded in 2007, LWB works to provide access to information, education, and cultural resources to vulnerable communities worldwide, using innovative tools such as the Ideas Box, a portable multimedia kit, and the Ideas Cube, a digital library. The organization operates in over 30 countries, focusing on crisis-affected areas, refugee camps, and underserved regions.
In Ukraine, LWB has been active since 2014, responding to the conflict in the east. The organization has deployed Ideas Boxes and digital libraries in schools, community centers, and shelters, providing educational and psychosocial support to children and adults. Programs include digital literacy training, language courses, and cultural activities to foster resilience and social cohesion. LWB works in partnership with local NGOs, libraries, and government agencies to reach displaced populations and host communities.
Since the escalation of the war in February 2022, LWB has scaled up its emergency response, establishing over 50 Ideas Box sites across the country, including in Kharkiv, Kyiv, Lviv, and Dnipro. These mobile units have served more than 100,000 beneficiaries, offering a safe space for learning and healing. LWB’s impact includes improved mental well-being, increased access to education for out-of-school children, and strengthened community ties amid displacement and trauma.
