Organization: Handicap International – Humanity & Inclusion
About
Handicap International – Humanity & Inclusion (HI) is an international non-governmental organization founded in 1982, dedicated to providing assistance to people with disabilities and vulnerable populations in situations of poverty, conflict, and natural disaster. HI’s global mission is to promote the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities, ensuring they have access to rehabilitation, health care, protection, and livelihood opportunities. The organization operates in over 60 countries, advocating for disability-inclusive humanitarian action and development.
In Ukraine, HI has been active since 2014, responding to the needs of conflict-affected populations, particularly those with disabilities and injuries. HI’s programs focus on physical rehabilitation, including provision of prosthetics and orthotics, psychosocial support, mine risk education, and distribution of assistive devices. The organization works in partnership with local authorities and civil society to strengthen the health system and ensure inclusive access to services for displaced and war-affected communities.
Since the escalation of the conflict in February 2022, HI has scaled up its emergency response, reaching over 200,000 people with critical support. HI provides mobile rehabilitation teams, emergency supplies, and protection services in frontline areas, while also advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities in humanitarian coordination. HI’s impact includes restoring mobility and dignity for thousands of war-wounded and ensuring that no one is left behind in the humanitarian response.
