HELVETAS
Organization: Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation
About
Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation is an independent development organization based in Switzerland, founded in 1955. Its global mission is to support people in developing and transition countries to improve their living conditions in a sustainable manner, with a focus on water and sanitation, agriculture and food security, climate change and environment, education, and governance. The organization works through a participatory approach, empowering local communities and strengthening local institutions.
In Ukraine, Helvetas has been active since 2014, initially focusing on decentralization and local governance reforms. Following the escalation of the conflict in 2022, Helvetas expanded its programs to include emergency response and early recovery. Its current portfolio in Ukraine includes water and sanitation (WASH) projects, shelter and non-food item (NFI) distributions, livelihood support, and protection activities, particularly in the eastern and southern regions affected by hostilities.
Helvetas has reached over 200,000 people in Ukraine with emergency assistance, including access to clean water, temporary shelter, and cash-for-work programs. The organization also supports local authorities in maintaining critical infrastructure and provides psychosocial support to conflict-affected populations. Helvetas continues to adapt its response to the evolving needs, with a focus on resilience and long-term recovery.
