Organization: The HALO Trust

About

The HALO Trust is a humanitarian mine clearance organization dedicated to removing the remnants of conflict, including landmines, unexploded ordnance, and other explosive hazards, to protect lives and restore safe access to land for communities worldwide. Founded in 1988, HALO operates in over 25 countries and territories, focusing on post-conflict recovery and risk education.

In Ukraine, HALO has been active since 2014, responding to the contamination from the conflict in the east. Following the full-scale invasion in 2022, HALO significantly scaled up its operations, deploying teams to survey and clear explosive ordnance in newly affected areas, including the Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv regions. The organization also conducts explosive ordnance risk education to help civilians stay safe.

Since 2022, HALO has cleared thousands of hectares of land and destroyed tens of thousands of explosive items, enabling the safe return of displaced populations and the resumption of agricultural activities. Their work is critical to Ukraine’s recovery, reducing the daily threat to civilians and supporting long-term reconstruction.
