Peacekeeping Mandate

A peacekeeping mandate is the authorization granted by the UN Security Council that defines the scope, objectives, and rules of engagement for a peacekeeping mission. It traditionally emphasizes non-coercive methods, but since 1973, mandates have allowed the use of force in self-defense, including to resist armed attempts that hinder the mission from fulfilling its duties.
